Posted By Orb Some Crappy "BBC" News Pope 'meant no offence' to Islam Muslims carry placards and shout anti-Papal slogans during a protest in Lahore, Pakistan Muslims in Pakistan staged an anti-Papal protest The Vatican has denied that Pope Benedict XVI intended any offence to the Muslim religion, after a speech touching on the concept of holy war.
Speaking in Germany, the Pope quoted a 14th Century Christian emperor who said the Prophet Muhammad had brought the world only "evil and inhuman" things.
The remarks have angered clerics and commentators around the Muslim world.
However, the Vatican said the Pope had wanted to make clear that he rejected violence motivated by religion.
The pontiff had not intended to offend Muslims, the Vatican said.
HAVE YOUR SAY Pope Benedict probably should self-criticise Christianity's violent past before commenting on the other faith John Lin, Illinois

"It certainly wasn't the intention of the Pope to carry out a deep examination of jihad (holy war) and of Muslim thought on it, much less to offend the sensibility of Muslim believers," said chief Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi in a statement.
"It is clear that the Holy Father's intention is to cultivate a position of respect and dialogue towards other religions and cultures, and that clearly includes Islam."
But the statement has failed to quell criticism. In developments around the world:
* Pakistan summoned the Vatican's ambassador to express regret over the remarks, as parliament passed a resolution condemning the comments
* The head of the Muslim Brotherhood said the remarks "aroused the anger of the whole Islamic world"
* Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya condemned the Pope's comments
* In Iraq, the comments were criticised at Friday prayers by followers of radical Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr
* Salih Kapusuz, deputy leader of Turkey's ruling AK party, likened the pontiff to Hitler and Mussolini
* The 57-nation Organisation of the Islamic Conference said it regretted the Pope's remarks
Violence and faith
The controversy comes on an important day for the Vatican, with Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, former Archbishop of Genoa, taking over as secretary of state.

Correspondents say Pope Benedict, who has been closeted with his chief advisers at his summer residence near Rome, is upset at the way in which his remarks have been interpreted.
The Vatican is seriously concerned that the protests might develop into violence directed at the tiny city state, says the BBC's David Willey in Rome.
But preparations for the Pope's forthcoming visit to Turkey, a predominantly Muslim secular nation, in November, are going ahead as planned.
In his speech at Regensburg University, the German-born Pope explored the historical and philosophical differences between Islam and Christianity, and the relationship between violence and faith.
Stressing that they were not his own words, he quoted Emperor Manuel II Paleologos of the Byzantine Empire, the Orthodox Christian empire which had its capital in what is now the Turkish city of Istanbul.

The emperor's words were, he said: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."
Benedict said "I quote" twice to stress the words were not his and added that violence was "incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul".
"The intention here is not one of retrenchment or negative criticism, but of broadening our concept of reason and its application," he added in the concluding part of his speech.
"Only thus do we become capable of that genuine dialogue of cultures and religions so urgently needed today."

Posted By Bicker Hurricane To Mehico? Hurricane Lane heads for Mexico Map of Mexico A tropical storm off Mexico's Pacific coast has been upgraded to a hurricane as it heads for resorts on the country's Baja California peninsula.
Mexico has issued a hurricane warning for the southern tip of the peninsula.
The category 1 hurricane has been packing maximum winds near 130km/h (80 mph) and is expected to strengthen.
At 2100 GMT, it was located 450km/h south-east of the Cabo San Lucas resort and was moving north-west at 15 km/h, forecasters said.
The initially Tropical Storm Lane is forecast to move parallel to the coast, passing by Islas Marias later on Friday.
It may brush the tip of the peninsula this weekend before heading back toward the Mexican mainland, forecasters said.
The eye of the storm was then expected to hit land near Los Mochis early on Monday.

Posted By Skirkue Ford Cutting Jobs? Ford cutting thousands of US jobs Man checking cars at Ford dealer Ford's US sales have been flagging Ford is cutting 14,000 white-collar jobs in North America as it tries to turn round its flagging business.
It is also to close 16 factories by 2008, instead of shutting 12 by 2012 as previously announced.
It said these measures would help it reduce annual costs by about $5bn (£2.65bn) by the end of 2008.
Ford had earlier said it would offer redundancy and early retirement packages to all of its 75,000 unionised US blue-collar workers.
Loss-making prediction
About 4,000 of the 14,000 job cuts have already been made earlier this year, Ford said.
Redundancies of 25,000 to 30,000 of its hourly-paid workers - primarily involved in making and assembling parts for new vehicles - were announced earlier but will now be completed by 2008, four years ahead of the previous schedule.
The steps we are announcing are clearly needed to ensure the ultimate turnaround of the business in Ford's biggest market Alan Mulally, Ford chief executive
Rocky road ahead for Ford
Ford said it would close an engine factory in Essex, Ontario, Canada, next year, and a stamping plant in Maumee, Ohio, US, in 2008.
An assembly plant in Norfolk, Virginia, US, will close in 2007, one year ahead of schedule.
And the firm, which posted a $123m (£66.5m) loss in the second quarter 2006, also now says its US plants will not see profit until 2009.
Ford will also suspend its share dividend payout as part of the cost-cutting.
"The steps we are announcing today are clearly needed to ensure the ultimate turnaround of the business in Ford's biggest and most important market," said chief executive Alan Mulally.
As Ford's European operations are profitable British employees are unaffected by the announcement.
Argus Research analyst, Kevin Tynan, said that Ford was likely to continue losing market share.
"That's going to be painful because that share is going to slip below the 15% they anticipate," he said.
"It will go to about 12 or 13% before it stabilises so there will need to be additional costs taken out."
He added: "Historically, the last thing the family wants to do is cut the dividend, so to suspend it speaks to how serious the situation is."
Independent review
When it first floated its redundancy programme the troubled firm said it was prepared to make individual buyout offers of up to $140,000 (£74,100).
Separately, two senior Ford executives, including chief operating officer Anne Stevens, announced they were stepping down a week after new chief executive Alan Mulally replaced former boss Bill Ford.
In January, the Detroit-based company had said it would cut up to 30,000 jobs and close 14 plants by 2012.
In July, Ford hired an independent adviser to carry out a strategic review of the business in an effort to return to profitability.
And last month, it announced its luxury UK car brand Aston Martin - made famous by James Bond - could be sold off under its shake-up plans.
There are also suggestions that Ford needs to cut back on the number of models it makes under its eight brands.
Ford currently operates the Ford, Land Rover, Mercury, Lincoln, Jaguar, Volvo and Aston Martin brands, and has a joint operation with Japan's Mazda.
Around the globe Ford employs a total of 300,000 workers.

UrgyDude Website Gave Clues?!?! Website gave clues to killer's intentions A photo allegedly showing Kimveer Gill, 25, named as the gunman who fired on a school in Montreal Numerous photos apparently showed Gill posing with weapons If the man police say killed one woman and injured many others in a shooting spree at a Canadian school was hoping for some respect from his fellow goths, there was little forthcoming.
"Pathetic in life... even less in your miserable death," said one posting on the blog Kimveer Gill had set up on a goth culture website.
"I can't understand how you can kill people only because you think they suck!" said another.
Kimveer Gill was 25 years old and was from Quebec, according to the details he put on his profile on the website.
He introduced himself by saying: "His name is Trench. You will come to know him as the Angel of Death."
He looked really mad... He looked like he really wanted to kill people Witness Mathieu Dominique
On Wednesday he entered a school in Montreal, in a trenchcoat and with a mohican haircut, and opened fire randomly.
One young woman was dead, several people were in critical condition, and more than a dozen others were injured by the time his rampage ended with his own death.
Police arriving on the scene exchanged fire with the gunman, but they believe Gill put a gun to his head and killed himself.
"He looked really mad... He looked like he really wanted to kill people," student Mathieu Dominique told the Canadian Press.
'Life sucks'
Gill's own postings on the site continued until 1041 (1441 GMT) Wednesday, only a few hours before he opened fire at Dawson College.
They said he had been drinking whisky, and that his mood was "crazy" and "postal".
A photo allegedly showing Kimveer Gill, 25, named as the gunman who fired on a school in Montreal Gill said he wanted to die in a hail of gunfire
There was little information on the killer except what he himself posted on his web profile, including what appeared to be his personal philosophy: "Work sucks... school sucks... life sucks."
The site carried numerous pictures showing the future killer dressed in a trenchcoat, brandishing a gun and a hunting knife, and in a red and white mask.
The pictures appeared to have been taken in a bedroom, which was adorned with gangster and horror film posters.
Some bore slogans expressing his anger.
One was a mocked-up gravestone with the epitaph: "Kimveer. Lived fast died young. Left a mangled corpse."
Another slogan proclaimed: "Life is like a video game, you gotta die sometime."
Massacre game
And it appeared Gill delighted in video games celebrating death.
Under "likes" he expresses admiration for Postal Dude, the player's character in the controversial computer game Postal.
A photo allegedly showing Kimveer Gill, 25, named as the gunman who fired on a school in Montreal The killer had had no dates recently
The game's title derives from the American expression "going postal", used to refer to someone who goes on a shooting spree to exact revenge for some perceived slight or injustice.
The game, which has been banned in some countries, involves a series of mundane tasks that culminate in a bloodbath.
He also said he liked to play Super Columbine Massacre, an internet-based computer game based on the 1999 shootings at a Colorado high school in which 13 people were killed.
He posted the results of numerous "about yourself" quizzes on the site, one of which concluded that: "Your life is bleak and sinister. You feel anger at the world and you feel like the victim... However deep down you are lost and crying out for help."
In answer to a survey he said he had no fears, and that the goal he would most like to achieve this year was to "stay alive".
Other answers included: Have you ever been in love? "Yes"; Do you get along with your parents: "No"; In the past month have you been on a date: "No"; How do you want to die: "Like Romeo and Juliet, or in a hail of gunfire."
